The 7 Things Every Small Business Website Needs to Convert

August 22, 2026 6 min readBy Carson Gahm

A website that actually brings in customers isn't built by accident. It's built on purpose, with each element doing a specific job. Skip one, and you're leaving money on the table. Here are the seven things every small business website needs to convert visitors into customers.

One: a clear, bold headline. The first thing visitors see should tell them exactly what you do and who you help — in one glance. 'Affordable landscaping for Michigan homeowners' beats 'Welcome to our website' every time. Your headline has about three seconds to earn the right to keep their attention.

Two: a phone number that's impossible to miss. Put it in the top right corner, make it clickable on mobile, and repeat it in your contact section. If someone has to hunt for how to reach you, they won't — they'll go to a competitor who made it easy. Your phone number should be one tap away, everywhere.

Three: a clear call-to-action. 'Get a free quote,' 'Book online,' 'Call now' — tell visitors exactly what to do next, and make that action available multiple times throughout the page. A vague 'Learn more' button does nothing. A specific, action-driven button does everything.

Four: social proof. Reviews, testimonials, real project photos — these build trust faster than anything you can say about yourself. When visitors see that other local businesses trusted you and had a great experience, they're far more likely to pick up the phone. Don't hide your proof on a separate page — weave it in.

Five: a services overview. People scan, they don't read. Give them a quick, scannable breakdown of what you do — not a wall of text. Short sections with clear headings let visitors confirm you offer what they need in seconds.

Six: mobile-first design. Most of your visitors are on their phones. If your site looks great on a laptop but falls apart on a small screen, you're losing customers. Text that's readable, buttons that are tappable, and a layout that works on any device — that's non-negotiable.

Seven: speed. A slow website kills conversions before visitors even see your content. If your site takes more than a few seconds to load, people leave. Clean code, compressed images, and no unnecessary bloat keep your site fast and your visitors engaged.

Every website I build includes all seven of these — because a website without them is just a digital business card that doesn't pay for itself. Want to see what a conversion-focused website looks like for your business? I'll build you a free draft first. Call or text me at (989) 350-5433.
