Facebook Ads for Small Businesses: A Beginner's Guide

July 20, 2026 6 min readBy Carson Gahm

Facebook ads are one of the most powerful tools a small business can use — but most local businesses either aren't using them or are wasting money doing it wrong. Let's fix that.

The magic of Facebook ads is targeting. You're not blasting a billboard to everyone driving by — you're putting your message in front of the exact people most likely to buy. That means targeting by location (people within 10 miles of your shop), by interests (people who follow home improvement pages, for example), and by behaviors (people who recently moved, or who are in-market for your service).

So how much should you spend? You don't need a massive budget. I work with small businesses spending as little as $5–$10 a day. The key is starting small, testing what works, and scaling up only when you're seeing results. A good campaign pays for itself — every dollar in should bring more than a dollar out.

The biggest mistake I see is businesses running ads without a clear goal. Are you trying to get phone calls? Quote requests? Foot traffic? Store visits? Each goal needs a different approach. Before you spend a penny, know exactly what you want people to do when they see your ad.

Another mistake: boring ad creative. People scroll fast. Your ad needs to stop the scroll — a bold image, a clear headline, and an offer that makes them want to click. I write the copy, design the creative, and test multiple variations to find what gets the best response.
